i'm smitten with the clark family

I woke up before 6am on Friday morning to get ready for my shoot and I have to admit that I was downright nervous. I had spent a good bit of time the day before planning and purchasing some fun goodies for the shoot, but now I was just praying that I could somehow rise to the occasion of shooting Sharon Clark (Smitten Photography) and her family. Um, I mean this is the girl whose images have inspired me since the day she started her photography business and whose images have continued to inspire me and SO many others ever since then. On top of that, knowing that they haven't ever really had "family photos", made me desperate to capture the depth and intensity of love that is shared between this amazing family.
It's funny because I've technically "known" Sharon for years via our mutual best friend, Lauren Kiser (aka one of my most favorite people to photograph!!), but its been a total blessing to get to know her myself and working behind/alongside her... see her heart and her passion for God, photography, and life in general. Sharon is just one of those people whose joy is purely infectious, so being around her is such a delight, and that joy is what I think that makes her work have such an emotional impact on others. Her photography is based on the beauty of real life.
So.... Sharon, Ryan, Elle and Bosten.... I hope that you fall in love with these images of your delightful family. I hope that you can take them and cover your walls and smile every time you see them because these are images that celebrate the love you all share.

*** Oh and by the way, Sharon and I just survived a very interesting weekend shooting a wedding in Knoxville. More to come on this, but let me just tell you that she is a hard core photographer and will shoot no matter what!!

some divine intervention

He went to UVA. She went to UVA. They never met at UVA. It took them both moving to Charlotte for them to meet. I appreciate it when divine intervention steps in like that to assure that 2 people who are meant to be together... are in fact, together. Seeing Chrissy and Ben interact its completely obvious that they are desperately in love with each other, made for one another, and that they both adore their pup Lex. For the love, seriously.
One of the coolest parts of my job is getting to set into people's lives and relationship... oberve them, capture their interaction and love. I never tire of this. I thrive on it. Thank you Chrissy and Ben for giving me so much to work with. You guys are awesome.

the magic of duke gardens

I grew up going to Duke Gardens on Sunday afternoons with my family and it has always been a magical place to me, so when Paige asked about doing her bridal portrait there it took me about .025 seconds to respond with a resounding... HECK YES! It doesn't hurt that I'm a huge fan of bridal portrait sessions, which I've heard other photographers complain about, but to me... what could be better to have a stunning bride and all the creative freedom in the world?! I love the personal focus, I love seeing the bride flaunt her dress for the first time, and I love it when random folks woo over the beauty of a bride. This session was special because I've already photographed Paige once, for the BELIEVE project, so it was nice to just feel like our time together just flowed beautifully! Paige embodies classic elegance in every day life/style, so seeing her in this dress... well, let's just say she was a vision amid the magic of Duke Gardens. There were more than a few little girls who I noticed admiring her from afar and I couldn't help but smile to myself and remember when I was in their shoes.

Kids and family :: 04.14.09

simple joys

When I was thinking about the best way to describe Susan, Brooks and their precious little kiddos... I kept thinking about how much they all simply seemed to enjoy each other. Our time together was genuinely fun because we all embarked on an adventure together... it was filled with games, snacks, and joy. I feel like I really got to capture them just being themselves, and loving each other. It didn't hurt that we got to play at one of my favorite parks in Raleigh, Umstead, the morning after an intense rain so the light shone through the trees with a fresh glow and we were all happy to bask in its glow.

** You just have to check out the girl's dresses in the last 2 shots - Susan's mom made them from antique linens and they are deliciously lovely! Who ever thought a tablecloth and pillow case could be so beautiful?!
