They have traveled the world together. They have shared life love and adventure together. This beautiful wedding day was the celebration of life they have shared and the life they will build. It never ceases to amaze me to watch how two families can surround two individuals with such great joy and celebration... it never ceases to amaze me because the impact and significance of this tradition is truly a divine gift.  Jenica and Derek, your day was beautiful and lovely in every way....

Dear Mom:

I know that today is your first day back at work after getting to spend all our days and nights together. Oh, how I've loved all the memories we already have together, even if I sometimes cry and seem upset about something. You have fed me, rocked me, lulled me to sleep in your arms, and helped me out with my every waking need. I just have to let you know that you have been the most amazing mom I have ever known and I can't believe that in just a few short months I already love you so much and am so proud to be your little boy. I hope you see these pictures and smile because you know I won't stay this small for very long and we both have to cherish all the precious moments as I grow and change. I love you in every way that I know how.

xoxo
Liam

One of the treats of freelancing with Fayetteville's CityView magazine has been getting learn about and experience places that I never would otherwise, and meeting the most fascinating people along the way. Before I left on my road trip I had the opportunity to visit the lovely Abingdon Manor, which is one of the few 4 diamond restaurants and properties in this area. I had the privilege of photographing one of their premier cooking classes, and OH how I wish that these images could be "scratch and sniff" because the smells that kitchen produced were intoxicating. I'm thrilled with how these images translated to print in the most recent issue of the magazine, and if you live in the area and are looking for a fun little getaway, Abingdon Manor is a delicious little must-see.

I read this last week and haven't stopped thinking about it since....

In Washington , DC , at a Metro Station, on a cold January morning in 2007, a man with a violin played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time, approximately 2,000 people went through the station, most of them on their way to work.

After about 3 minutes, a middle-aged man noticed that there was a musician playing. He slowed his pace and stopped for a few seconds, and then he hurried on to meet his schedule. About 4 minutes later: The violinist received his first dollar. A woman threw money in the hat and, without stopping, continued to walk. At 6 minutes: A young man leaned against the wall to listen to him, then looked at his watch and started to walk again. At 10 minutes: A 3-year old boy stopped, but his mother tugged him along hurriedly. The kid stopped to look at the violinist again, but the mother pushed hard and the child continued to walk, turning his head the whole time.

This action was repeated by several other children, but every parent - without exception - forced their children to move on quickly. At 45 minutes: The musician played continuously. Only 6 people stopped and listened for a short while. About 20 gave money but continued to walk at their normal pace. The man collected a total of $32.

After 1 hour: He finished playing and silence took over. No one noticed and no one applauded. There was no recognition at all.

No one knew this, but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the greatest musicians in the world. He played one of the most intricate pieces ever written, with a violin worth $3.5 million dollars. Two days before, Joshua Bell sold-out a theater in Boston where the seats averaged $100 each to sit and listen to him play the same music.

This is a true story. Joshua Bell, playing incognito in the D.C. Metro Station, was organized by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment about perception, taste and people's priorities. This experiment raised several questions:

  • In a common-place environment, at an inappropriate hour, do we perceive beauty?
  • If so, do we stop to appreciate it?
  • Do we recognize talent in an unexpected context?

One possible conclusion reached from this experiment could be this: If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world, playing some of the finest music ever written, with one of the most beautiful instruments ever made how many other things are we missing as we rush through life?

You can read the whole article here.

Like I said, I read this last week and have been thinking about it EVERY day since. I have sent it to several friends and one of my dearest friends wrote this back to me....

"I think we should start a pact of occasionally, and randomly, asking each other if we're "listening to the violins". keep each other in check."

I love this. How do you perceive beauty every day? Are you listening to the violins?

I've found the more I photograph, the more I stop and find the beauty in things. Everything is beautiful if you find the right angle, I think. It's just that some people are too busy to actually look for the angle.

That said, I think I do need to slow down. There are somethings more important than work or grocery shopping or schedules or bed time - Joshua Bell playing would be one of them.

It is the sweet, simple things of life which are the real ones after all.     -Laura Ingalls Wilder

Well, it's no big surprise that I get emotionally involved in most of the sessions that I shoot. This is something that I don't shy way from because I think that engaging in the lives and relationships of my clients helps me to more accurately portray their genuine personalities and connections. But OH, oh sweet little newborns make me get teary every time and this was certainly no exception.

New mom, friend and fellow photographer Heather welcomed first baby into the world with her husband Jeremy... and this little babe is surrounded by so much love and joy that it's truly tangible. These two proud parents couldn't help but look upon their new son and GLOW, and I think that you will be able to see it too. I was honored that they asked me to be there to document their newly expanded precious family.
